This specially designed Simpson Desert Camper Trailer 4WD Tag Along Tour gives experienced travellers with suitable off-road camper trailers the opportunity to tackle one of Australia’s great outback journeys with the support of an experienced guide and like-minded convoy.

Following a similar route to our traditional Simpson Desert crossing, we’ll travel through the Flinders Ranges, along the historic Oodnadatta Track, visit Dalhousie Hot Springs and then take on the legendary Simpson Desert before finishing in Birdsville.

The big difference? This tour is planned specifically around travelling with camper trailers.

We’ll travel at a pace suited to towing, carefully manage tyre pressures and dune crossings, and allow additional time where required. ⚠️ Camper Trailer Approval Required

This is a camper trailer-specific tour, however not all camper trailers or tow vehicles are suitable for a Simpson Desert crossing.

All tow vehicles and camper trailers must be assessed and approved by Adrenalin Off-Road Centre prior to the booking being confirmed.

Approval will take into consideration:

  • Tow vehicle suitability and mechanical condition
  • Camper trailer type and construction
  • Overall size and weight
  • Ground clearance
  • Tyres and wheel setup
  • Front and rear recovery points
  • Towbar and coupling
  • Vehicle and trailer load
  • Fuel and water capacity
  • Recovery equipment
  • Previous towing and 4WD experience

Approval is based on the suitability of the complete vehicle and trailer combination, not simply the make or model of the camper.

Our priority is ensuring every setup is capable of completing the planned route safely without unnecessarily impacting the convoy, tracks or other travellers.

🚙 This isn’t your average camper trip

Towing a camper trailer through remote desert country requires considerably more preparation than normal touring.

Expect soft sand, repeated dune crossings, corrugations, remote tracks and changing conditions.

Drivers need to be confident towing off-road and willing to follow guide instructions regarding tyre pressures, vehicle spacing, momentum, recovery procedures and track conditions.

The reward is pretty special: cross the Simpson Desert by day, then pull up and enjoy your own camper setup beneath the desert stars each night. 🌅🏕️

❓ Frequently asked questions

Can any camper trailer come on this tour?

No. Every camper trailer and tow vehicle combination must be assessed and approved before booking. Suitability depends on weight, size, clearance, tyres, recovery equipment, tow vehicle setup and other factors.

Do I need experience towing off-road?

Yes. Drivers should already be comfortable towing on dirt roads and off-road conditions. Previous sand and remote-area experience is highly recommended.

Why is approval required?

The Simpson Desert presents unique challenges for vehicles towing trailers. Approval helps us make sure the complete setup is appropriate for the route and helps protect the safety of the group.

Will towing use more fuel?

Yes. Towing through soft sand and repeated dune crossings can significantly increase fuel consumption. Your required fuel capacity will be discussed during the approval process.

Can I bring kids?

Yes, families are welcome. Children must remain under the supervision of a parent or guardian throughout the tour.

Can I bring pets?

No pets are permitted because the tour travels through National Parks and sensitive desert environments.

What insurance do I need?

You must have comprehensive insurance covering both your vehicle and camper trailer for off-road use. Please confirm this directly with your insurer.

What happens if tracks are closed?

Desert tracks can close due to rain, flooding or other conditions. If a planned section becomes unsafe or inaccessible, we’ll use alternate routes where possible and adjust the itinerary with safety as the priority.
