It's a place where the drive is every bit as important as the destination. One minute you're climbing a ridgeline with huge mountain views, the next you're dropping into a valley, crossing a river or pulling up beside a historic High Country hut.

The landscape, weather and track conditions can change quickly, which is all part of what makes exploring this part of Victoria such a rewarding 4WD experience.

VICTORIAN HIGH COUNTRY FAQ

Good to Know Before You Go.

A few of the most common questions about our Victorian High Country 4WD tours, from track conditions and river crossings to camping, vehicle suitability and changing routes.

How difficult are the Victorian High Country tracks?

The High Country includes everything from easier touring tracks through to steep climbs, rocky descents and more technical terrain. The difficulty depends on the tour and current conditions. Check the individual tour's skill level before booking, and talk to our team if you're unsure whether it suits your experience.

Are there river crossings on the tour?

River crossings are a big part of exploring the Victorian High Country, but depths and conditions can change quickly. Our guides check and assess crossings as we travel and will change the route if a crossing isn't appropriate for the group or conditions.

Do you always visit places like Wonnangatta, Blue Rag and Billy Goat Bluff?

Not necessarily. These are some of the places we may explore, but the exact route can change between departures because of weather, track conditions, river levels, seasonal closures and access. That flexibility is an important part of touring the High Country safely.

What happens if a track is closed?

The High Country has seasonal closures and tracks can also become unavailable because of weather, maintenance or other access issues. If that happens, the Adrenalin crew will adjust the route and choose the best available alternative for the group.

What sort of weather should I expect?

High Country weather can change quickly, even during the warmer touring months. Conditions can range from warm sunny days to cold mornings, rain, wind and sudden temperature drops, especially at higher elevations. Come prepared for changing mountain conditions.

Is the 7-day Victorian High Country tour camping?

Yes, the multi-day High Country adventure includes remote camping. You'll need suitable camping equipment and personal gear for the trip. The individual tour page and pre-departure information will explain what you need to bring.

What type of 4WD do I need?

You need a suitable, mechanically sound 4WD prepared for the tour's terrain and conditions. Vehicle requirements can vary between tours, so always check the individual tour page for the current requirements before booking.

Can beginners join a Victorian High Country tour?

It depends on the tour. The Mt Terrible 1-Day Tour is a great option for drivers wanting a shorter introduction to High Country touring, while the 7-day adventure involves more remote travel and a broader range of terrain. Each tour has a stated skill level to help you choose.

Can I bring passengers or children?

Yes. Passenger places are available on our High Country tours, including child passenger pricing on applicable departures. Check the individual tour page for the current passenger pricing and booking options.

What is the Hema Maps involvement in these tours?

Selected Victorian High Country tours are run in collaboration with Hema Maps. You'll see the Hema Tours branding on applicable departures and tour listings.

Do I need to plan the route or organise access myself?

No. That's one of the big advantages of joining an organised Adrenalin tour. We handle the route planning and relevant tour logistics, assess conditions as we travel and make the route decisions along the way so you can concentrate on the driving and the destination.

What happens if my vehicle has a problem on the tour?

Your vehicle should arrive properly serviced and prepared for the trip. If something goes wrong, the Adrenalin crew will help assess the situation and assist where practical. Participants remain responsible for their own vehicle, repairs and any recovery or transport costs that may be required.

Give the Adrenalin team a call. Tell us about your vehicle, your 4WD experience and the tour you're considering, and we'll help you work out which Victorian High Country adventure is the best fit.
