Installer in Sydney for Landcruiser 79 4WD upgrades
We love working on Toyota Landcruiser 79’s in our 4WD workshop in Sydney. It is such a durable, tough 4WD vehicle to use for work or camping in Australia. Some will say it is a ‘real 4WD’ that is perfectly suited to Australia’s tough driving conditions.
Jamie’s uses his 2021 Toyota Landcruiser 79 for heavy load hauling, carrying things with the rear tray as well as taking it off road to go 4WD’ing when he is not working. Even though this 79 has a diesel powered 4.5 litre V8 he wanted to improve the Landscruiser’s engine power.
We organised for it to be taken to Berrima Diesel to get an engine tune to improve driveability as well as total power output. Getting your 4WD diesel engine tuned in Sydney helps to modify the standard factory settings to better optimise your engine’s dynamic outputs. Most tunes for 4WD engines coming from a manufacturer are relatively conservative as they need to cater to a really wide array of uses as well as by suitable to be covered under warranty. Berrima Diesel will spend some time to understand your needs before their tuning is done on your 4WD engine to unlock improved performance to suit your application/s. Most of the time owners want more torque because they are transporting a boat, caravan or even trail bikes not just on road, but along trails or even water crossings.
We also made sure Jamie thought about managing all that extra power & torque with;
- A new heavy duty clutch and flywheel to replace the standard factory fitted item. This is needed to manage the increased torque loads from the engine.
- Improving the Landcruiser 4WD’s braking capacity with an upgraded brake package from Bendix that included new calipers, discs & rotors.
The team in our 4WD shop in Sydney will always remind owners that there is not much point improving engine performance but leaving the other factory fitted items on the vehicle in their standard specification. Sure, most manufacturer fitted parts will be good tolerances, but most likely they will fail sooner rather than later as they attempt to manage the extra performance demands from the vehicle. Just think about any motor racing application, there is literally nothing other than the badge of the manufacturer that is left ‘standard’ as performance improvements are made to the vehicle.
A road going 4WD is no different. Engine & drivetrain improvements require the supporting items to be able to handle the extra outputs.
To round out the upgrades we installed on this Landcruiser 4WD in our workshop, Jamie also chose to get a billet sealed alternator installed. This waterproof alternator is perfect for water crossings and will continue to function as water enters the engine bay. The other item that was installed on this 4WD was a new Cel Fi Go signal booster to improve his capabilities in remote locations to keep in touch using telephone or internet connectivity.
Rapid Power alternator installed on a Toyota Landscruiser 79 in Sydney
Rapid Power makes a range of full sealed, water-cooled, alternators that are designed specifically for different 4WD vehicles. We installed a brand new Rapid Power PR1TWC-14/200 onto this Landcruiser 79. This type of alternator is designed to be used in really dusty, wet and corrosive driving conditions with its sealed design. It mounts onto the oem engine brackets and also uses the factory fitted drive belt. This means you can upgrade your alternator without having to modify other parts of the engine.
Using a sealed alternator can help improve reliability especially if you plan on going 4WD’ing in sand dunes, beaches, through river crossings, the outback or even on local tracks that can get quite dusty in dryer months.
Rapid Power alternators produce significantly more output than existing standard alternators. Their design features are engineered beyond those of conventional alternators like the rectifiers that are manufactured with high temp genuine Bosch Zener diodes mounted into highly efficient heat-sinks.
The vehicle already has a snorkel so a water tight alternator makes a perfect combination to ensure the engine will keep working in harsh driving conditions or while submerged in a river crossing.

If you have been around for a while you will know Bendix quite well. They make OEM as well as aftermarket brake products including rotors, calipers and pads like their Bendix Ultimate 4WD Brake upgrade kit

- 1 x Vehicle Set Ultimate Brake Hose
- 1L Heavy Duty Brake Fluid
- 1 x Can Bendix Cleanup
- 1 x Tube Ceramasil Brake Parts Lubricant
- Bendix rotor wipes
This type of upgrade will give you a firmer brake pedal that won’t over expand under pressure, a reduction in brake dust and braking noise along with thermal stability in high temperatures and a much greater resistance to brake fade.
That is just the fronts!
Jamie also also chose to upgrade the rear brakes too plus improve braking strenght with an upgraded brake booster. Doing this type of brake upgrade front and rear takes your 4WD to a whole new level of stopping performance. Great for carrying heavy loads, towing or even controlling your vehicle on steep declines.
