Simpson Desert West To East
Take on the classic Simpson crossing through endless red dunes, Big Red and iconic desert tracks, with some itineraries also incorporating the Oodnadatta Track and Flinders Ranges.

Simpson Desert 4WD Tours are about much more
than simply crossing the desert. Endless red dunes, remote tracks,
vast salt pans, desert camps and some of Australia's most isolated
country make every crossing an adventure.
In collaboration with Hema Maps, Adrenalin delivers
professionally guided tag-along adventures through the Simpson,
combining experienced tour leaders, carefully planned routes and
the support of travelling with a convoy through seriously remote
country.
There are few places where you can experience remoteness quite like the Simpson Desert. Out here, the dunes seem endless, the horizon stretches forever and the journey becomes as important as the destination.
Spanning the remote country where South Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland meet, the Simpson is an extraordinary landscape of parallel sand dunes, salt and clay pans, spinifex, desert vegetation and enormous open skies.
A Simpson crossing is a true remote-area 4WD journey. There are no fuel stations waiting around the next corner, no towns scattered along the route and very limited facilities. Instead, days are spent travelling through dune country and nights are spent camping beneath some of the clearest skies in Australia.
The Simpson is famous for its vast parallel sand ridges, but there's much more between them. Depending on your route you'll encounter salt and clay pans, spinifex-covered swales, gibber country and vegetation that can change dramatically after rain. The colours shift throughout the day from pale ochre to the deep reds that have become synonymous with the Australian desert.
Once you're deep into the desert, civilisation feels a very long way away. There is no mobile phone coverage across much of the Simpson and no fuel or everyday services through the crossing. Being self-sufficient isn't simply part of the adventure; it's an essential part of travelling here.
The Simpson has a rich Aboriginal cultural heritage and a long history of exploration, surveying, pastoral activity and oil exploration. Places such as Poeppel Corner, old survey routes and historic tracks add another layer to the journey across this remarkable part of inland Australia.
Desert camping is one of the best parts of a Simpson journey. At the end of the day's drive, the convoy finds camp amongst the dunes and settles in for the night. With towns and city lights hundreds of kilometres away, clear nights can reveal an extraordinary outback sky.
Depending on the itinerary, some of our Simpson Desert adventures
take in much more than the dune crossing itself.
The journey may include sections of the legendary Oodnadatta Track, travelling through classic
South Australian outback country where old railway history,
remote settlements, vast open plains and iconic roadside stops
form part of the experience.
Some itineraries also touch the spectacular Flinders Ranges, adding rugged mountain scenery,
changing landscapes and another completely different side of
outback Australia before the desert even begins.
It turns the trip into more than a Simpson crossing. It's a
genuine outback journey through some of the most memorable
country in South Australia and Central Australia.
The desert is crossed by a network of legendary 4WD tracks, each
offering a different journey. The French Line is perhaps the best known, running directly across dune after dune,
while routes including the WAA Line, Rig Road and QAA Line create
different options through the desert.
Then there are landmarks that have become part of Simpson Desert
folklore. Poeppel Corner marks the meeting point
of South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory, while
the famous dunes approaching Birdsville culminate in the challenge
of Big Red.
Conditions are never guaranteed. Wind reshapes dune crests, rain
can close tracks and flood low-lying country, and heavy traffic can
make dune approaches increasingly chopped up. That's part of what
makes every crossing different.
The Simpson might be the headline, but the road there can be just as much a part of the adventure.
The dunes might be what first puts the Simpson on the bucket list, but it's the scale, the camps, the changing country and that feeling of being properly remote that make the experience so memorable.
Each day brings another stretch of remote track, another line of dunes and another completely different set of conditions. Sand, clay pans, corrugations and changing dune faces keep the driving interesting from one side of the desert to the other.
Some of the best Simpson moments happen after the engines stop. Find a camp amongst the dunes, settle in with the convoy and watch the desert change colour as the sun disappears.
With very little artificial light for hundreds of kilometres, clear desert nights can be spectacular. Sunsets roll into huge star-filled skies and give the Simpson a completely different personality after dark.
The scale of the Simpson is difficult to understand until you're standing in the middle of it. No city noise, no crowds and often nothing on the horizon except dunes, desert vegetation and the vehicles you're travelling with.
It's not just a desert crossing. It's the kind of journey that makes the rest of Australia feel very far away.
Our Simpson Desert 4WD Tours take different routes through this incredible country. Choose the classic crossing, head into the remote Hay River country or follow the historic Madigan Line.

The Simpson is spectacular, but it's also remote outback travel. Preparation matters. Here's what to expect before you point the bonnet towards the desert.
Simpson Desert travel is generally undertaken through the cooler months. Summer temperatures can be extreme and seasonal closures apply to parts of the desert. Conditions can also change quickly following rain.
Once you're in the desert, services are extremely limited and mobile reception shouldn't be relied upon. Remote communications, careful planning and the ability to deal with unexpected situations are important parts of travelling here.
Your 4WD needs to be mechanically sound and properly prepared for sand, corrugations and remote travel. Tyres, suspension, recovery equipment, spare parts and vehicle weight all matter when you're hundreds of kilometres from the nearest workshop.
Distances between fuel, water and other services can be significant. Fuel consumption also increases in soft sand and difficult conditions, so carrying suitable reserves and knowing your vehicle's range is essential.
Much of the experience is remote camping. You'll need suitable camping equipment, food, drinking water and everything required to comfortably look after yourself between resupply points.
Dunes change, tracks become chopped up, salt pans can become impassable and rain can close entire routes. A Simpson crossing is never simply a case of following last year's itinerary.
We take care of the permits and access arrangements for you. Simpson Desert routes can involve parks, reserves, private land and changing access requirements. Our team organises the required permits for your tour and keeps across current closures and conditions, leaving you to focus on getting your 4WD ready for the adventure.
You don't need years of desert-driving experience to join many of our Simpson tours. We'll guide you through tyre pressures, dune driving, convoy procedures and the techniques needed along the way.
Weather, flooding, fires, track closures and access restrictions can alter routes with very little notice. That's part of remote-area travel. Our itineraries may be adjusted when conditions require it, with the aim of keeping the group moving safely while still delivering a memorable outback adventure.
That's one of the big advantages of travelling with Adrenalin. You bring your 4WD and sense of adventure. We bring the route knowledge, convoy support, permits, access arrangements and experience to help you get across.

The 2024 season delivered a very different Simpson. From the Oodnadatta Track and Dalhousie Springs to sticky salt pans, Poeppel Corner, a flooded Eyre Creek and the final climb up Big Red, this crossing kept the convoy busy from start to finish.

This adventure showed exactly why we love combining the Simpson with the broader outback. The journey took in the Flinders Ranges, Oodnadatta Track, Mount Dare, Hay River, Ruby Gap and Big Red, with plenty of remote country in between.
